Stressful Summer June 30, 2006

Can’t believe it’s July 4th weekend already? People are out there having fun with the holiday and we are here working on our midterm exam and summer research paper.

Work is getting crazy as well.  The To Go analysis is still in process.  The next project is already waiting to be completed.  Can’t even get a short break to adjust the mind set.

Tired, exhausted, and completely torn down.  Headaches and shoulder pains are killing me.  Never had such a bad headache for a long time.  It’s such a long summer with both mental and physical tortue.

Is there really an end to this?

Maggiano’s Employee Focus Group June 16, 2006

Two employee focus groups today.  The first one turns out to be a huge beaching session.  The second one is back of the house.  Only one speaks English.  A Spanish translator is used during the group.  They don't complain as much as the front of the house.  They are probably more holding back since they don't speak English.  However, it's a sure sign that Maggiano's has issues with their employee satisfaction.

It's such a shocker to hear all the dirts coming out of the groups.  Since I like the brand a lot, it's really hard to believe their employees are so unhappy.  I guess sometimes it's hard to see the true inside by just looking from outside.

Masochist? June 10, 2006

Is it really crazy for a woman in her early 30 with a decent job to go back to school for PHD?  People asked "Why are you putting yourself through all this pains for no reason?" "You are making a decent money.  The PHD won't make any differences for you.  Why are you doing it?" "Why don't we quit together?" "When are you going to have time to get married?" "I think you belong to this category called masochist?"

What about dreams? What about achieving lifetime goals?  What's wrong with having a big dream?  Well, might not be able to achieve it eventually, but doesn't hurt for trying?  People always say "No pain! no gain!"

It's not a normal lifestyle – no TV, no shopping, no social life, no time for anything else besides study.  It's only work and school.  Nothing more, nothing less.  At least it's simple and worry free.  I really enjoy it when I learn new things everyday.

Maybe someday I will wake up in the morning, feel the stupidity of this whole journey and quit.  Maybe someday a life changing event kicks me out of school.  Maybe…

But until then… it's ok to be a masochist.  "Life is like a box of chocolate.  You never know what you will get."
